Errata
Obviously, I haven't been doing much in the way of blogging. Not that anyone has likely missed my screeds...

I have spent a lot of time catching up on my reading, mostly American Revolution and Civil War. I've spent WAY too much time watching TV lately. Mostly I watch movies, sports and news - I never watch series television. Netflix on the Roku device (which is still performing marvelously) is addictive. There are some decent movies that flew under the radar, and a lot of foreign films I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise, that eat up a couple of hours a day. Plus it seems a waste to let that new 52" plasma go unwatched. My remining free time is usually spent w/grandchildren or motorcycling, or yard work, or doing ANYTHING besides in front of my computer typing out this drivel.

The good people of Massachusetts declined to resurrect Kennedy's bloated corpse and return him to the Senate. Good for them. They did, however, elect a big government liberal - albeit with an "R" after his name. Oh, well. I guess you can't have anything.

Colts Lose ...

I learned some things this weekend:
1. If you're playing the Patriots, mistakes will cost you the game.
2. The Pats are as good as advertised.
3. When the difference between the two teams is as razor thin as between the Colts and Pats, missing a starting lineman and your best receiver is a big handicap.
4. Tom Brady is a helluva quarterback with top-notch receivers.

With all that, the Colts very easily could have won this game. Make no mistake, the AFC championship is going to go through New England barring an epic collapse in the second half of the regular season, but the Colts will be all right, I think. The Colts can't afford a letdown in the second half as the Titans are only a game behind and the Colts' schedule is tough the rest of the way. The AFC East is the lousiest division in the AFC, the Pats are in the catbird seat and should win it going away while the Colts will be in a dogfight.

It's probably just me ...
In January, the Colts won the Super Bowl. This year, I haven't quite got with the program. The 7-0 start is great and all, but my level of enthusiasm isn't quite the same. I'd hate to think I'm that easily jaded, but...****
The evil New England Patriots are coming to town . The hype machines are in full spin and though I know that this will go a long way toward determining home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, I have a hard time getting all that worked up over a regular season game.

While watching my Red Sox, It occurred to me that I am not nearly as excited about their Series win in '07 as I was in '04, maybe because it had been so long waiting and hoping for the first win.
I am emphatically NOT a bandwagon fan - my allegiance to the Sox goes back to the early 60's. My son is named for Yaz, although spelled with a "K." I had no local team to root for back then. There was some talk of an MLB team for Indy way back when, but the franchises in Chicago and Cincinnati were against the idea due to a loss of fan base.
To this day I detest all things Chicago and actively root against their sports teams. The White Sox and Cubs for obvious reasons and the Bears just because. Same for Cincy, although my antipathy toward Cincy doesn't rise to anywhere near the level I reserve for Chicago.
Although dropping the series to the Reds in '75 was more than a little annoying...
Anyway -
The Red Sox are world champs!

BTW, my affinity for the Sox doesn't mean I am any less desirous of a pasting of the Patriots by my Colts. I'm going out on a limb and predicting Colts by a touchdown over New England.

It's been a long time since I felt good about the Indiana Pacers. When I was a kid and the Pacers were in their old ABA glory years I loved the team. Now, I would love to see them do well, but as a product I find the NBA to be less than compelling. I would love to see the NBA adopt international rules.The regular season is nearly meaningless. Oh well.
The Pacers are about to open their season. They aren't expected to do much, so I won't be too disappointed if they don't set the league on fire, but I hope they give me a reason to cheer.
I also hope they cut out the extra-curricular crap that has given the franchise and the city a black eye over the past few seasons.

Purdue junior Omkar Borkar was shocked when sledders continued to sled into an injured man on Slayter Hill. Police reported multiple injuries on the popular sledding spot following the 5" snowfall Tuesday.

Capt. John Cox of the Purdue University Police Department said police were called to the popular sledding hill near Stadium Avenue about 10:30 p.m. because snowballs were being thrown at emergency workers who were trying to help the injured.

Super Colts!

The city of Indianapolis - the state of Indiana - now has a champion in a major sport in a league that still exists. I love(d) the Pacers, but the ABA is long gone and those banners are a little threadbare.
Peyton Manning has won the big one and is the Super Bowl 41 MVP.
A team that has a domed stadium for a home has won the Super Bowl.
In crappy weather.
Haters can put a sock in it.
And Mike Royko, wherever he is, can kiss my Hoosier ass.

Super Colts!

Indianapolis Colts 38, New England Patriots 34
Now that Peyton Manning and the Colts have kicked the Patriots monkey off their backs, it's time for the Colts to step up and win Super Bowl 41.*
A national championship for the city would be sweet. The Pacers came close once. This is our second - and best so far - shot at the brass ring.
The world won't end with a Colts loss. I don't get too high after a win or too low after a loss. This is just a game, after all. The Colts franchise is based in the city; it is not the city. As the people of Baltimore learned more than 20 years ago the championships and records belong to Jim Irsay and the Colts franchise, not the city that supports them and if the Colts were to relocate to Los Angeles next year, the trophies and records would go with them.
That said, a Super Bowl championship will once and for all sever the ties to Baltimore. The franchise's glory days are now, not 30+ years ago.
It's a great ride so far. Go Colts!
*I'm sick of the pretentious Roman numerals. Enough already. It's football, dangit.
